I’ve recently learned someone close to me talks to himself. He says he just start saying his thoughts. I’ve walked in on him having two sided conversations with no one else.I know other people who sort of talk to themselves, but not like this… Why does he do that?

It is how some people reason things out. Sometimes to physically talk things through helps. And having a “two sided” conversation makes sure you are seeing things from both sides.
They are insecure and they talk to themselves how they are screwing up everything. I do this, and people that I know do this as well.
I talk to myself when I have a tough problem to figure out. Sometimes it’s better to hear things aloud to figure them out rather than just thinking about them. Saying things out loud can also help you catch things that may be wrong, or the solution to the problem.
For most people, it helps them to think if they are saying it allowed. For instance, i sometimes mumble out the work as I am writing it down and solving, I guess it just helps to hear it.
Sometimes it is just a way of thinking or coming up with stuff. I do that a lot, but full blown conversations… that is another thing.
It’s just a silly habit. All little kids talk to themselves, and gradually they teach themselves not to because of social inhibition. But if you’re alone or you just don’t care about what others think of you, chatter away.
I knew of someone who use to talk to mailboxes. The mind is quite a remarkable thing, sometimes it protects, sometimes its diseased, sometimes its just personality.
